The Royal Anchor Car Park
- Sam (21st Jan 2016 10:18:48)
To whom it may concern.
I would like to make you aware that the Royal Anchor car park is private property and is primarily for customer use. In principle we have no problem with customers of other local businesses using our car park for shorts periods of time as we understand that parking can be difficult in the centre of Liphook. However we cannot continue to allow people to park here for extended periods of time when they are not using our facilities. The congestion of our car park is having a negative impact on our loyal customers and some of our customers with mobility issues are unable to find a space near the entrance. We have the option to introduce stricter enforcement but we hope that this will not be necessary.
It has been agreed that we will sell a limited number of weekly permits for people wishing to park here all day. They will be available to purchase from the bar and allow cars to be parked at the far end of the car park away from the entrance.
If you have any queries please feel free to contact me on 01428 722244.
Yours Sincerely,
Sam Lavender
General Manager.
P.S We also have two seemingly abandoned cars which we would very much appreciate if the owners could remove as soon as possible. They are a Red Peugeot Saloon and a Blue Peugeot People Carrier.

This old post makes interesting reading about the ownership of the car park in question.

The car park down the side was paid for by the council 30 odd years ago the pub supplied the ground and the council payed for the car park to be made, the understanding was it could be used for local parking during the day and for extra parking for the pub at night, my father's still has the newspaper cutting of it in his loft. I only read the article about 3 years ago. So when home will go in his loft to sort it out, it was all done by major coyte

If the land is registered at the Land Registry as most land is nowadays, it should show both ownership and any encumbrances such as rights of way or easements. Anyone bothered can ask them for this information and they will provide paper copies for a small fee.
If the council made an agreement with the pub then unless it was registered, you'd ideally need to see the written agreement, but knowing how incompetent councils can be, I wouldn't hold my breath..
Otherwise, the pub are being quite reasonable about allowing us to park there for short periods, let's not take advantage, there is another free car park just round the corner. Enjoy it whilst it lasts, the way Liphook is growing we'll soon need a multi-storey. Or else they'll put a block of flats there!

There is a car park between 17 and 19 Haslemere Road (almost opposite Chiltlee Manor), another one further down on the left which is next to the Little Recreation Ground, and there is the one by the Haskell Centre/Peak Centre too. Not sure about who can use the one next to the Social Club on Headley Road. Two lay-by's down Longmoor Road, a lay-by down Portsmouth Road. Dare I say it but I think a lot of people would like to park within two steps of their destination?

I think he means the car park behind the chemist - plenty of free parking there

Re: The Royal Anchor Car Park
- Jamie (24th Jan 2016 12:25:31)
Yes true, but very small and not exactly a public car park. The chemist one seems to be used for very short term use for getting prescriptions etc and moving around is difficult. But apart from those with mobility problems it looks like we are spoiled for choice! Most people need to look down and see that they have feet at the end of their legs.

Whilst I agree with Jamie that people could walk a bit more, this only works if you're in a position to pop to the shops for a few bits. If you're going for a weekly grocery shop you'd need to take the car with you. However, if you paying your paper bill at the newsagents in the square and you need to visit the chemist, you'd be hard pushed to get everything done in the 2 hours you're allowed in Sainsburys car park

I am sure I will be corrected if I amwrong, but before people get into trouble following Jamie's car parking suggestions, isn't the very small car park opposite CM entrance for residents along Haslemere Road only?
The car park at the little rec off Haslemere Road also marked as being for residents and users of the library?
The social club car park is most definitely not for general use - it's for the social club and village hall users only.
Sainsburys car park is fairly central for getting to village shops. Don't imagine they would take kindly to anyone parking long term as some seem to do in the Anchor.

The little car park opposite Chiltley Manor is owned by Hampshire County Council, so I do not believe it is for residents only, residents of where? there is nothing specified on the sign for specified houses or specified private business use. I also do not believe that Sainsbury's has
CCTV cameras there, or we would have heard reports on here about being fined! The car parking area nearest the Millenium Hall is designated for users of the Millenium Hall and no CCTV operable there so you could park there for more than 2 hours. Unless there was a legal agreement between the Anchor and EHDC, which would have prompted a sign surely in the Anchor carpark, then it is doubtful that such an agreement is anymore than wishful thinking! We at least still have free parking in the council carparks unlike bigger towns.

The car park opposite Chiltlee Manor is owned by EHDC as is the Midhurst Road and Station Road one (next to the surgery).
If we are honest with ourselves most of us rely on the car out of habit. There are lots of ways to reduce car use such as online shopping, or parking further away and walking the last half mile. Average walking time is 3-4 miles per hour so a 10 minute walk would be good exercise for many. I see residents of Bramshott Place striding into Liphook but also local parents driving their children to the Rec to take part in sport!
Don't start me on the parents who park as close as they can to the Junior Schools. I know some who only live a couple of roads away! But that is for another thread.

Perhaps people are not aware that the Car park in the Midhurst Road near the Peak Centre is now patrolled on a regular basis and tickets are issued if cars parked for over 5 hours.
There are signs to this effect on entering but not everyone sees them and several have received tickets so be aware.

Thank you for your comments
Just to clarify I have confirmed with our estates department, who have checked the deeds and ownership plan, that none of the Royal Anchor car park is part owned by the council. I would like to thanks all those that have found alternative parking as it does seem a lot clearer now.

Hi,
Resurrecting this thread from 2016 to see if Keven is still around?
Keven mentioned in the comments below that their father has the newspaper cutting regarding the use / status of the Royal Anchor car park in his loft.
I know its a while ago now, but would like to see if we can get a copy of the cutting, or if anyone else knows?
Thanks.

The Anchor has been through some very good times and very low times. Seems to have gone down again looks shabby and unloved an old caravan parked up the left side in a conservation area is that allowed. There have been some very good community supporting landlords that made the Anchor a very nice place to go for a reasonable priced meal seems this has all changed. Such a shame as it’s in the centre of our lovely village and a conservation area kept looking lovely with the liphook in bloom flower beds and basket’s.

Yes seems a little run down weeds growing up the left side driveway. It’s a large car park in the centre of our square totally agree you should not park in there for a long time without going in the Anchor but a little give and take goes a long way. It used to be a very fun place good community pub reasonable food and prices. Something not quite right used to be very busy especially Friday nights and weekends. Perhaps Green King are not interested in looking after the place in a place like liphook such a shame.

There was a verbal agreement between the council and the anchor and as it's been used that way for so long it's a right of way now. Talk to people that have lived in Liphook all their lives not a 2 bit run down pub owners!!!

OK let me start by declaring I quite like the Anchor, horses for courses, it isn't pretentious, the food doesn't claim to be gourmet, no-one says the burgers were made by a chef who trained in London so it's going to cost you £40 a head for lunch, but it has a pool table, TVs, a great child friendly garden and what's not to like, ok the burgers aren't gourmet but they are burgers, the chips, like everywhere else are just chips, the beer is beer, I'm a bit done with paying through the nose for eating out thinking that if my burger cost £18 and my Guinness £6 a pint it was going be life enhancing or better than the dinner I cooked last night, actually pub food is just something to fill your tummy while you enjoy a beer and a laugh with mates and watch your credit card go into meltdown, maybe if you can afford it and your in laws are over for Sunday lunch or it's a business meeting take them to a different place, we have choices!
It reminds me of the good old pubs of my youth when pubs were just pubs not restaurants, eating out was a bag of crisps or roasted peanuts with your pint, a microwaved pie and chips with ketchup if you were flush, now most have put on ambitiously priced gastro airs and graces, more often than not beyond the reality of the epicurean experience, ouch!
OK I got to parking, so apparently the Anchor have reintroduced parking restrictions for non patrons, not sure if it's the whole or just the part in front of the Anchor, I've not needed to park there recently, so best to check the signs or ask inside. As for old agreements or ownership issues on the lower car park, this has come up before but don't think anyone was able to trace any documentation to show anything existed.
I can't blame them for wanting to keep it for visiting patrons, especially when you consider how negative a lot of the local reviewers have been about the pub in recent times, perhaps they're often the same people who seem to think the Anchor should let them park in their car park for free when out shopping, out of some kind of old fashioned communal spirit!

The problem is the pub is not doing enough business. They have tried everything including fake reviews on Tripadvisor to turn it round but the fact is it is a poorly run pub. No doubt the area bosses are challenging the management who I understand told their bosses that one of the problems was that the new cinemas customers along with shoppers are filling the car park up so potential pub customers were going elsewhere. Have to say I’ve never seen the car park full. The new rules are just another example of how out of touch with the “lovely people of Liphook “ the current management are!
