Train fares - Mark (30th Aug 2022 22:42:04)
I think someone mentioned this on a different thread - can I ask about train fares?
I usually travel from Haslemere as there are more trains per hour. It seems if I buy a Petersfield to Waterloo return I can save £12 or less compared to the shorter Haslemere journey. How is this possible? Presumably I can buy a Petersfield ticket and get off early at Haslemere or even Liphook and save money?
Really interested to know.

31.30 v 44.70 for standard anytime return is a great saving.
Even 1st class @ 42 .50 is good.
Albeit a longer journey if no changes.
I too seen have seen the prices on the SW train site.
However technically you should be using the station the ticket states ie Petersfield to start your journey.
I believe it’s in their T & C s.
The gates at Haselmere may not open with a Petersfield ticket.
On the odd occasion you may be ok,but regularly, probably not.
Coming back I’ve never had a problem getting off at an earlier station.
But going up do you want that risk.

Not sure how this is being calculated - but using the SWR website:-
(a) London Terminals anytime day return from Liphook is £47.50, but from Petersfield is £62.50
(b) it is possible to buy and "advance single" in each direction from Petersfield for an overall cost of £39.50. Advance single tickets are not always available and have to be used on specific trains. Advance Single tickets do not appear to be available on journeys to London from Liphook.
Standard anytime day return from Liphook to Waterloo is £47.50
EG:
#1 - Liphook to Godalming - Anytime Day Return - £8.20
#2 - Godalming to London (All Stations) - Anytime Day Return - £33.40
Total: £41.60 (saves £.5.90).
This reduces to £39.62 if you have a network railcard with the following split:
#1 - Liphook to Godalming - Anytime Day Return - £8.20
#2 - Godalming to London (All Stations) - Anytime Day Single - £17.70
#3 - London (All Stations) to Godalming - Anytime Day Single - £13.00
Split tickets: You stay on the same train. The train must call at the stations you buy the tickets for.
Buy your tickets from SWR - not a reseller like TheTrainLine because they charge booking fees. the SWR app is quite good as you can pay by Apple Pay and your tickets are emailed to you.

I was using the SWR app for return fares at different times of the day with a network railcard and there was always a big saving when comparing Haslemere to London and Petersfield to London and sometimes Liphook to London. I think it automatically finds the cheapest fare.
It seems to be best when it’s peak times and when travelling on a Thursday and returning on a Monday so far.

The trainline app doesn't charge booking fees if you buy the ticket on the day. I've found it automatically does the split ticketing on it and usually cheaper than the SWR app.

Be careful with the SWR app and also the website as 2 weeks ago they were giving out wrong fares. Booked at the ticket office and London travelcards were £10 cheaper! You wouldn't actually know the app or website fares were wrong if you didn't check.
