PELICAN CROSSING IN THE SQUARE
- PEDESTRIAN (15th Oct 2022  11:52:31)

Pedestrians beware! This morning I waited at the crossing to walk over to the Royal Anchor side. A driver coming from my right kindly stopped and I waited for the traffic to stop on the left side. But no fewer than three vehicles failed to stop even though they must have seen the stationary car. I fear that there is a serious accident waiting to happen in the Square. The stationary vehicle driver was as appalled as me.

Please, please drivers, slow down and show some patience!

The times we have asked for it to be made a controlled crossing falls on deaf ears. So much for listening to the community.

Absolutely, a pelican crossing here would do wonders for the flow of traffic through the square at school times and safer to. The whole square comes to a grinding halt each morning and afternoon as the constant ‘stream’ of children crossing, almost in a continuous line, causes gridlock.

There are pelican crossings everywhere else (outside Bohunt and the top of Portsmouth Road by Lloyds bank) so why not outside the Anchor?

To (safely) hold the pedestrians, allowing the traffic to flow and then to cross as a group surely makes more sense in an attempt to ease the awful congestion in our beautiful square…

Just to put out another thought out there.

I agree the traffic congestion at peak times through The Square can be bad (and only happens during the school terms), but I think we should be promoting that all the school children walk to their schools, not making it harder.

The present Zebra crossing means that the kids can walk unimpeded through The Square in their own time. Those of us in cars just need to accept that the pedestrian has precedence for an hour each morning and afternoon and will need to accommodate that fact in our journey planning.

Jens comment "To (safely) hold the pedestrians, allowing the traffic to flow and then to cross as a group......" is in conflict with the new current thinking that pedestrians have more rights/protection in crossing roads. Also how do you "safely hold" groups of children? I'm pretty sure they will not wait for the red lights and will attempt to cross between moving (if it is actually moving) traffic resulting in even more conflict and the resulting danger to the children.

Leave the Zebra crossing alone, drivers accept the delay/modify your travel plans and lets find a way to remove the vehicles from The Square. That will help everyone!

Totally Totally agree we Must strive to get all the through traffic away from the square. This has been building up from when the by pass was built and when bordon new town got going. The powers to be ie EHDC and HCC are as usual years behind. We lost our chance at the lowsley development to get traffic away from the square from bordon . Something must be done with future planning because we are only going to get a much larger community .
