S
Whether we live in the country or not is irrelevant
[a]https://www.gov.uk/garden-bonfires-rules[t]www.gov.uk/garden-bonfires-rules[c] - in where it is stated
'You could be fined if you light a fire and allow the smoke to drift across the road and become a danger to traffic.'
As The Maltings is bordered by the Haslemere Road, that would qualify as a breach

You should have a drive along Highfield Lane at the moment.
Highfield School (I believe it's them) are clearing/burning loads of trees and undergrowth and the smoke is horrendous.
Feel sorry for near neighbours.

I do not think Chiltley close could be classed as countryside. If your neighbours are affected by smoke you should not light bonfires. The gardens there are not big enough.

Re: Burning smoke
- Question 9 (17th Feb 2023 09:28:03)
Go on Joe I will take the bait, have a look at the overhead map of the area, you will see a lot of tree canopy in those 'small gardens'.
I live on the Berg, we have 23 trees in what is not a huge garden. They produce 25m3 of leaves, about a third of an artic lorry compressed. Thus if I was to put them in the garden waste bin, assuming they collect every two weeks, that is all my garden waste for a year!
Editor: I love this web site, am praying for fireworks and local council posts, then I have bingo in a single week, Bonfires, Local Council, rumoured planning, firing range/ helicopters/noise, dog poo, bins and traffic! You are a saint!

An impressive amount of trees for your garden but the Berg is still not countryside. You can always store them they can be used in compost. I too have a lot of trees but I am in the countryside proper and rarely have a bonfire leaves do rot down.

Question 9 I feel your pain, I don't like to rake this all up again but I can't leaf it like that, perhaps you could branch out and build a few simple in-line mesh cubes, about 2 metres square each, your beds will have the best possible leaf compost next year, with all those trees and a big Berg house you should have a spare corner in your fine forest garden, the Berg used to be an arboretum in its own right so you are lucky to have so many (hopefully) protected trees, but all you good burghers really cannot go burning that many leaves you naughty lot, we need to root this out!

Re: Burning smoke
- Question 9 (18th Feb 2023 10:40:31)
Hi er/Joe many thanks for your direction.
This web site is like a drug, you dabble and it pulls you back in!
On the subject of composting and mulch, I know a little on the subject professionally. Leaf mulch great if I had the time (or my back could take it, difficulty enough to rake them) would be lucky to get it composted in a 12 month period on a two month turning cycle. So I collected 25m3, turn it six times (120m3 as I will lose circa 40% through the program gradually as the microbes get to work ) and I end up with 15m3 of average compost/ mulch.
Irritatingly already got a 3m3 green composting area in the corner of my 'forest garden'.
On the plus side think of the money we will save on cat food!
Joe: Think I need to rent some land from you to deal with the issue. You don't happen to have a front loader I could borrow periodically too.
er: Love your prose, greatly appreciated, cannot believe you have not written professionally at some stage.
Or I could just follow 'Locals' well trodden route!
Good Luck to all you naughty gardeners over this dry weekend, the wind is blowing East to West today, so the good folk on the Chitlee Close crack on!
Best Wishes to all, have a great weekend.
